Biographical notes


Čedo Vulević
(1927) has started his writing career as a poet, to become later the author of thirty short stories and five novels (one of which was banned by Montenegrin court). He has also written about ten screenplays for full-length feature films and documentaries. He is a member of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Vojislav Vulanović (1931), a poet. He has published numerous collections of poetry and received many literary awards, including the Thirteen July Award. He is a member of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Sreten Asanović (1931), a fiction writer. His work includes about ten books of short fiction and one novel “Putnik”. His stories, collections of stories and books have been translated in more then twenty languages. He has been included in many local and international anthologies. He was an editor of Podgorica literary reviews “Susreti” and “Stvaranje”, as well as of Sarajevo review “Odjek”. He was also the President of the Association of Writers of SFR Yugoslavia. For his work he won many important literary awards (Thirteenth July Award, Goranova Award...)

Sreten Perović (1932), a poet and theatrical and literary critic. His work includes fourteen collections of poetry, several books of essays dealing with literary and theatrical criticism, about fifteen books of translations and renditions of Macedonian poetry, two dramas and several anthologies of Montenegrin poetry. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, Yugoslav and International Literature Department. After graduation he returned to Montenegro to become an editor and Director of the Publishing Department in “Pobjeda” and a member of editorial board of anthology of Montenegrin literature, published in the scope of famous “Luca” series. He has been the Director of the Institute of Lexicography of Montenegro until closure of that scientific institution. For his work he won several important national and other awards, including two Thirteen July awards.

Jevrem Brković (1933), a poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. He is the most prolific Montenegrin writer: he has published more than eighty books that included poetry, short fiction, novels, dramas, essays and polemics. He has been translated in almost all European languages, with books published in German, Italian, Czech, Slovenian and Albanian language. His work has been the subject of numerous scientific studies. He is the President of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences. A thirty-volume edition of his complete works has been recently released in Podgorica. He has been included in several anthologies of international poetry. He is an initiator and funding member of the Montenegrin PEN, Montenegrin Association of Independent Writers and Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences. For his work he won several important national and other awards, including the Thirteen July Award.

Novak Kilibarda (1934), a University professor and novelist. He has published many studies in the fields of literary theory and history. He is also the author of about ten collections of stories as well as of two novels (“Crnogorska hronika” and “Mozaik crnogorske hronike” that comprise his engagement as a fiction writer). He received numerous literary awards. In addition he is a very significant researcher of folk literature.

Bosiljka Pušić (1936) has published several collections of poetry, three books of short fiction and two novels. She is also a painter. She is a member of Montenegrin Association of Independent Writers.

Mirko Kovač (1938) has written several novels, collections of short stories, screenplays for television and full-length feature films. He is a winner of international awards including Tucholsky Prize (Swedish PEN), Herder Award, Bosanski stecak Award and Vilenica Award, as well as several important ex Yugoslav awards. His books have been translated in many languages (German, French, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, Dutch, English, Swedish...). His first book of fiction “Gubiliste” was criticized on political grounds and some of his awards have been withdrawn. Some of his books were reprinted several times. His “Selected Books” have been published in Sarajevo. He is also known for his scripts for films “Okupacija u 26 slika”, “Pad Italije”, “Tetoviranje”... He lives in Rovinj, Croatia since 1991.

Mladen Lompar (1944), a poet and art critic. He graduated from history of art. He has published fifteen collections of poetry (selected in the book “Dodir za gubiliste”). He is an editor of the review for literature, culture and social issues “Ars”. Besides literature he also writes art criticism and essays and his art engagement also included position of curator on one of the Cetinje Biennials. He is the Vice President of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences and the first winner of Zlatni pecat Crnojevica Award. His works have been translated in many languages.

Zuvdija Hodžić (1944) graduated from the Faculty of Philology. Besides two novels, he has published a collection of poetry “Na prvom konaku”, collection of stories “Gluva zvona”, as well as one book of non-fiction travelogues. He is a member of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences. He gave several exhibitions of drawings and graphics. In addition he has published a book of drawings and accounts on old Podgorica entitled “Podgoricom starom”.

Marko Vešović (1945) was born in Montenegro. He lives in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. He is a poet, novelist, essayist, literary critic and editor of numerous anthologies. He has published several books of poetry, novel “Rodonacelnik”, books of polemics “Cetvrti genije” and “Smrt je majstor Srbije” and book of essays “Na ledu zapisano”. He translates from French. He has also translated poetry of Emily Dickinson. He won several literary awards. His engagement during the aggression on Sarajevo earned him the status of a symbol of defense of that city.

Miodrag Vuković (1947) has published books of short stories “Krug, soba” (1978), “24” (1993), “Kobna ljubav Ane Frank” (1991), and “Mlaka voda” (1998), a book of poetry “Strip crtač” (1983) and an anthology of Sunday column articles published in Pobjeda, daily paper he works for, “U prolazu”.

Momir M. Marković (1948) was educated to become an economist, works as a journalist and has a vocation to poetry. He has published several books of poetry, several theatrical plays (which were adapted for stage few times), a book of stories and two studies of Montenegrin history. He is a member of the Doclean Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Božo Koprivica (1950) graduated in comparative literature from the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, where he still lives. He used to be an editor of “Knjizevne novine”. His published works include “Volej i sluh” and “Kis, Borges i Maradona” of almost indeterminable literary genre.

Ljubomir Djurković (1952) a poet, playwright and dramaturgist. He has written two collections of poetry, as well as several dramas, whose productions gained cult acclaim. He is the Director of the Royal Theater “Zetski dom” in Cetinje. His works have been translated many times. He translates from Dutch, having lived in Holland during the nineties.

Milorad Popović (1957) has published several books of poetry, as well as books of essays entitled “Mali narodi i nacionalizam” and “Crnogorsko pitanje” (which appeared in several reprints). His poems have been translated in about ten European languages. He is the President of Montenegrin Association of Independent Writers, Operational Editor of “Ars” review and Director of Open Cultural Forum organization from Cetinje. Because of his anti-war engagement during the nineties he was forced to leave Montenegro.

Sreten Vujović (1957) primarily deals with poetry, as well as translating (from German and Italian), literary criticism, essays and sculpture. Both his poetry and fiction have been translated in many languages. He has published few collections of poetry. Because of his anti-war engagement and his efforts on preservation of Montenegrin cultural and national identity he has lost his job and has been arrested. His book “Kako se vratiti” is a poetical and prose account of his three-year emigrant experience.

Milovan Radojević (1960) graduated in comparative literature and theory from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. He was an editor of cultural and art program on Montenegrin National television. He has published numerous texts dealing with cultural and literary issues, a book about Montenegrin National Theater and one novel “Dominik”.

Zoran Kopitović (1961) has written numerous essays, as well as several television and theatrical plays. He has published novel “Shizofrenija melanholicnog Boga” and short humorous novel “Amerikanac u Parizu”, which was the base of two cult theatrical productions. He died in a car accident in 1996. He was a member of Montenegrin Association of Independent Writers. He was a journalist in Radio Montenegro.

Željko Stanjević (1962), a fiction writer. He has published three books of fiction. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature Department. He lives in Belgrade, working as a professor.

Balša Brković (1966), a poet, novelist, theatrical and literary critic. He graduated in comparative literature. His work includes five collections of poetry and one hit novel “Privatna galerija”. His poetry has been translated in many languages. He is a Deputy Editor and Editor of cultural section in daily “Vijesti”. He is a member of editorial board of “Ars” review and theatrical review “Gest”.

Dragan Radulović (1968), a writer and literary critic. He has published a collection of short stories and one novel “Auswitz café”. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy. He is a professor in a high school in Budva.

Aleksandar Bečanović (1971), a poet, fiction writer, literary and film critic and translator. He has published four books of poetry. He is a winner of the “Risto Ratkovic” Award. He is an editor of cultural section in independent weekly “Monitor”. His work has been translated in several European languages, and he translates from English.

Pavle Goranović (1973) graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy. He has published three books of poetry. He also writes fiction and literary criticism. His poetry has been translated in many languages. He is the Secretary of Montenegrin Association of Independent Writers and a member of editorial board of “Ars” review.

Andrej Nikolaidis (1974), a fiction writer, literary and film critic and theoretician of pop culture. He has published an anthology of Montenegrin poetry of difference, two books of short stories and two novels. He translates from English. He is a columnist in many media.

Ognjen Spahić (1977), a fiction writer and literary critic. He has published a book of short stories “Sve to”. He works in daily “Vijesti”.

Jelena Stanovnik (Helen Tenant) (1978), a fiction writer and translator from English and Italian. Her translations in Montenegrin include works by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Charles Bernstein. She has published short stories in several literary reviews.

Jovanka Uljarević (1979), a poet. She has published two collections of poetry. She is a member of editorial boards of several reviews and magazines. She is a student of philosophy and politicology.
